Bobby Gage, a standout quarterback at Clemson who played two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, died at 77.
Gage died after suffering a heart attack at his home in Greenville, the school said in a statement.
The MVP in Clemson's 24-23 victory over Missouri in the Gator Bowl as a senior in 1948, Gage helped Clemson complete an 11-0 season.
Gage threw for 2,448 yards and 24 touchdowns in his college career and also played defensive back and returned kicks.
A first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1949, Gage played both tailback and defensive back for Pittsburgh. He threw for 623 yards and three touchdowns in two seasons. He rushed for 334 yards and six touchdowns on 85 carries.
He was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 1976, the South Carolina Hall of Fame in 1978 and the Gator Bowl Hall of Fame in 1990.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville
